St. Olaf men's basketball fall to Cal Lutheran in holiday tourney
December 30, 2003
The St. Olaf Mens Basketball team traveled to Thousand Oaks, California to play in the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Holiday Tournament. The tournament was hosted by California Lutheran, with three other teams, Wisconsin Lutheran, Rockford College, and St. Olaf participating. On Monday, December 29th, 2003 the Oles opened the tournament taking on a tough California Lutheran team. Despite holding the Kingsmens leading scorer to five points, the Oles fell 67-50.
The Oles played well in the first five minutes of the game, but could not seem to get past 12 points as Cal Lutheran pushed the lead to 14 points. As the half came to a close, the Kingsmen made a late push and were able to go into the locker room with a 17 point lead.
The second half began with the Oles cutting the Kingsmens lead to eleven. However this was as close as St. Olaf would get, as Cal Lutheran pushed their lead to 20 points.
Leading the way for the Oles was Nate Lund (Sr. Mankato, Minn.) who posted a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jon Butala (FY West St. Paul) also reached double digits, scoring ten points.
St. Olaf returns to action in day two of the tournament on Tuesday, December 30 against Wisconsin Lutheran.
