Men's hockey wins MIAC home opener, 5-3
December 6, 2003
The St. Olaf men's hockey team played their first home conference game against Saint Marys. The Oles, knowing how important it is to win at home, set the tone for the MIAC season with a strong 5-3 victory over Saint Marys.
Josh Biser (So., Waunakee, Wis.) scored first for the Oles with a hard shot in the lower corner of the net. The Oles extended their lead by two goals in the first period, when Dan Norsten (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) fired a hard shot past the Saint Marys goalie. Minutes later, Norsten continued his great play with his second goal of the game, giving the Oles a 3-0 lead. Saint Marys finally got on the board in the second period by taking advantage on a power play goal.
Saint Marys caught the Oles flat footed in the start of the third period and tied up the game with two goals in a row. The Oles next goal came from Ronn Guild (So., Kent, Wash.) to put St. Olaf back on top. Mitch Mudra (Fy., Edina, Minn.) put the finishing touch on a 5-3 victory for the Oles scoring an empty net goal.
In net for the Oles, goalie Garret Hasti had 41 saves on 44 shots in the win.
With the win, the Oles moved their MIAC record to 2-5-1. The Oles face Saint Marys in Winona, Minn. for game two of the weekend series on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
