Men's Soccer settle for 0-0 tie in season opener
September 5, 2003
The Ole men?s soccer team kicked off their 2003 season at home against Luther College on Saturday. Luther, a formidable opponent fresh off a NCAA National Tournament appearance last season, was the first of 8 extremely tough non-conference opponents for the Oles this season.
It was a beautiful day in Northfield, sunny, and close to 80 degrees at the beginning of the match. After a tough preseason training camp, the Oles looked prepared, disciplined, and composed, dominating both possession, and quality scoring opportunities. The Oles were equally sound on the defensive side. With junior goalkeeper Kyle Trimble setting the tone between the pipes, first year Andrew Gastineau, sophomore Mike Prendergast, and sophomore Jacob Olsen all made impressive St. Olaf debuts.
For 90 minutes of regulation time the Oles held Luther scoreless, but unfortunately, failed to convert a goal of their own. The best scoring chance for the Oles came in the 75th minute when first year Abu Farah drilled a shot off the far post. For 20 tough minutes of golden goal play in overtime the Oles remained dominant, but could not find the back of the net. The game ended in a 0-0 tie after double overtime.
After a strong opening performance, Coach Kurt Anderson and the rest of the Ole team appear ready for four more tough non-conference games before the MIAC opener at Gustavus on September 17th.
