Oles settle for 1-1 tie with Carthage
September 9, 2003
Coming off a disappointing loss to Whitewater Saturday, the St. Olaf Men?s soccer team took the field Sunday at Carthage poised to earn their first victory. From beginning to end the Oles had their way with the Carthage Redmen, passing at will and dominating possession and scoring opportunities. Unable to take advantage of a handful of opportunities in the first half, St. Olaf settled for a 0-0 tie at halftime.
St. Olaf continued their dominant play in the second half, and in the 62nd minute, Brian Kehoe (FY) drilled a shot top-shelf, beating the Carthage goalie. Minutes after Kehoe?s strike, Carthage answered with an equally impressive goal off a free-kick, just outside 18 yards.
Regulation time ended with the score tied 1-1, and neither team managed to score in either overtime period. After double overtime the match ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
Senior captain Mark Gilmer was unable to play against Carthage because of a knee injury aggravated in the loss to Whitewater. First year Michael Peabody started in place of Gilmer in the center midfield. Peabody played solid in extended minutes.
St. Olaf goes back to work this week, training in preparation for two non-conference games against Oshkosh, WI and Lawrence, WI on Sept. 13th and 14th.
