Lawrence sends men's soccer home scoreless

A day after a tough road loss to UW- Oshkosh, the St. Olaf men's soccer team traveled to Appleton, Wisconsin for a game against Lawrence University. The Oles were ready to play tough, but another day of poor playing conditions found the Oles shutout by Lawrence 2-0.

In conditions similar to Oshkosh on Saturday, the field at Lawrence was full of standing water, enough standing water to bring many balls played on the ground to a complete stop. In a first half that was characterized by sloppy play on both sides, Lawrence attacker Rodrigo Gomes finished a beautiful goal with his left foot from about 30 yards out. His shot, still rising when it hit the upper corner of the goal, left St. Olaf keeper Kyle Trimble with no chance.

The second half was bogged down by fouls and more sloppy play. Despite a few decent chances, the Oles were unable to establish any rhythm on offense, and were again beaten by Rodrigo Gomes when he placed a half volley in the upper corner, with a shot that slid by the keeper. With the 2-0 loss to Lawrence, St. Olaf was shutout for a second day in a row.

The Oles returned home with two days to prepare for the MIAC opener against Gustavus on Wednesday in St. Peter.
