Men's soccer gets Gustavus, 1-0 in double overtime
September 19, 2003
The St. Olaf men's soccer team started their conference play this past week with a game against Gustavus. Both teams were scoreless during regulation, forcing the game into overtime. During the second overtime, the Oles held on with one goal, to shutout Gustavus 1-0 double overtime.
The Oles fought the wind and the persistent Gusties for 45 tough minutes in the first half, and went into halftime tied 0-0.
With the wind in their favor the Oles managed to control more of the play in the second half, but with 38 seconds remaining in regulation time Gustavus forward Caleb Bosu was fouled in the box, and the Gusties awarded a penalty shot. St. Olaf keeper Kyle Trimble correctly guessed left and came up with a terrific save on the penalty kick taken by Gustavus midfielder Bobby Kroog, to keep the game scoreless.
The Oles had new life, and went into overtime fired-up and ready for a victory. St. Olaf fought the wind in the first overtime, and again held Gustavus scoreless. In the second overtime, with 3:36 remaining, first year forward Eric Halaas managed to poke the ball loose to sophomore midfielder Ryan Franz who was waiting to finish the game-winner.
The Oles celebrated their first win of the season, and will return to action against Saint Mary's on Sunday, September 21, 2003 in Winona, Minnesota.
