Women's soccer undefeated in MIAC conference, 2-0
September 25, 2003
On a blustery day on their home field, the St. Olaf women?s soccer team won their second conference game of the season against Gustavus, 2-1.
The Oles started strong, scoring just three minutes before halftime when Kelsey Watt (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.) finished a corner kick taken by Ashley Mark (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) to put the Oles on the board. As with many corner kicks, the ball bounced around in the goalmouth without anyone putting a solid foot on it. But Watt?s aggressiveness paid off and gave the Oles a 1-0 lead going into half time.
The Oles came out in the second half determined to add to their lead. In the eighth minute Kaia Knutson (So., Fargo, ND) served up the perfect cross from the left flank. Watt headed the ball past the scrambling Gustavus goalkeeper. In the 13th minute, the Gusties avoided a shutout with a shot from outside the 18. The Oles out-shot the Gusties 18 to 7 and took 6 corner kicks to 3 from Gustavus.
This win keeps the Oles undefeated in conference play at 2-0, and 4-4-0 overall. The Oles face their next conference opponent on Saturday, Septemeber 27th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas.
