St. Olaf drops Homecoming game to Saint John's

The St. Olaf football team lost its second straight game to #2 nationally ranked Saint John's University, 45-6 in MIAC action on Saturday, September 27th. A Homecoming crowd of over 5,000 watched the game at Manitou Field.

Saint John's opened the scoring when junior Brandon Keller kicked a 25-yard field goal. Later in the first quarter, SJU senior QB Josh Nelson scored on a six-yard run to give the Johnnies a 10-0 lead.

The Johnnies scored twice in the second quarter before St. Olaf responded with Bobby Andrade?s (FY, Bell Gardens, Calif.) five-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 24-6. The ensuing extra point was blocked with less than two minutes left in the half.

Saint John's continued to pour on the offense in the second quarter when Jake Theis scored on a 67-yard touchdown run. The Johnnies scored two more times in the fourth quarter to extend their lead and give Saint John's the victory with a final score of 45-6.

The Johnnies racked up 553 yards in total offensive compared to St. Olaf?s 213. St. Olaf's Andrade rushed 27 times for 73 yards, scoring the Oles only touchdown. Senior Quarterback Brian Senske (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) completed 8-of-15 for 90 yards.

With the loss, St. Olaf now drops to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC. Saint John's improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC. St. Olaf travels to St. Paul to take on the Tommies from St. Thomas at 1:00 p.m. St. Olaf returns home in two weeks to take on the Bethel Royals at 1:00 p.m. at Manitou Field on October 11, 2003.
