Men's Tennis Tops Macalester 5-4
April 15, 2003
The St. Olaf Men's Tennis Team improved to 4-4 in the MIAC with a thrilling 5-4 home victory over Macalester on Saturday afternoon. The Oles began the match by winning 2 of the 3 doubles matches. Sobieski and Cohen won at No. 2 to make the score 2-1 going into singles competition.
St. Olaf's Bidlingmaier took down Werth at the No. 4 singles. Ted Nagel defeated Loken at No. 2. Macalester rebounded to win the next three matches, tying the score at 4-4.
It all came down to the battle of the "Ski's" at the No. 3 spot: Sobieski vs. Yesilevskiy, Mac's star recruit out of the Republic of Georgia. Sobieski, fatigued by the intense 70-degree heat, made a couple uncharacteristic unforced errors, costing him the second set. Sobieski regained his composure in the Super Breaker, winning 10-6 and sealing the St. Olaf victory.
Players in the match were Ted Nagel (Jr., Oglesby, Ill.), Tom Nagel (Jr., Oglesby, Ill), Matt Sobieski (Senior, Mahtomedi, Minn.), Dan Cohen (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.), Mike Matsuura (FY, St. Cloud, Minn.), Matt Clark (FY, Northfield, Minn.), Mike Donohue (Sr., Spirit Lake, Iowa), and Tom Wampler (Soph., Green Bay, Wisc.).
Next up for the men's team will be a meet against Carleton in Northfield, on April 16 at 4:00 p.m.
