December 9, 2002

The Oles once again struggled on the offensive end and were unable to beat the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University. Tough defense from the Cardinals kept the Oles to just 16 points in the first half, while Saint Mary's scored 25 points. The Oles were able to score more points in the second half, but the Cardinals held a double digit lead throughout the half, as the Oles were defeated, 60-44.

The Oles shot 26.3 percent from the field, compared to 36.7 percent by the Cardinals. Saint Mary's shot well from the arc, going seven of 16 for the game with five different players connecting on three-point shots. The Oles shot 50 percent from the free-thrown line, while the Cardinals shot 64.3 percent.

Once again, St. Olaf led the opponent in rebounding with 52 rebounds, while the Cardinals had 39. Kristy Larson (So, St. Ansgar, Iowa) led the Oles with ten rebounds, Sarah McBroom (Jr, Mora, Minn.) had eight and starting center Mayme Cupkie (Sr, Owatonna, Minn.) grabbed seven rebounds.

Leading scorer for the Oles was McBroom with eleven points, and Jill Johnson (Jr, Butterfield, Minn.) and Liz Mundahl had nine apiece. The Oles have two tough conference match-ups left before the winter break, as they play Gustavus on Monday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 pm and cross-town rival Carleton College on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 6:00 pm. Both games will be held in Skoglund Center.
