Fastpitch team loses to nationally ranked St. Mary's
April 10, 2002
The St. Olaf fastpitch team traveled to Winona to take on number two nationally ranked St. Mary's University for their first conference games. The Oles played tough, but ultimately it was errors that hurt them in both losses, 4-2 and 10-2.
The second inning of the first game cost the Oles. The Cardinals scored 4 unearned runs off of 3 errors and 1 hit. The Oles defense played very strong, led by pitcher Melissa Ohm (So. Rochester, Minn.), and held St. Mary's the rest of the game. In a seventh inning rally, Kirsten Haaland (Jr. Billings, Mont.) and Kelly Frederick (Jr. Minnetonka, Minn.) started the offense with back to back singles. Rachel Colson had a one out single to left field, scoring Haaland and Frederick and giving the Oles hope, but it was too little, too late. The Cardinals held the Oles the rest of the inning and handed them a 4-2 loss.
The Cardinals came into the second game with a strong and aggressive bats. In the first inning, St. Mary's scored eight runs on five hits and three errors. The Oles held and managed to score two runs off of a double by Megan Urbanski (So. Circle Pines, Minn.) scoring Megan Corson (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) and Haaland in the fourth inning. The Oles just could not bounce back after the first inning. The game ended in the fifth inning with two outs on an RBI by the Cardinal's right fielder to enforce the eight run lead after five innings rule and the Oles lost 10-2.
The next match-up is Thursday, April 11, at Mabel Shirley field where the Oles will take on the University of St. Thomas at 4:00 p.m.
