Ole baseball sweeps Concordia

On Tuesday, the Oles improved their conference record to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep over the Concordia Cobbers. The Oles pulled out a 3-2 comeback win in the first game and a 8-0 victory in the second.
Dan Norsten's (So, Eagen, MN) pinch hit single in the top of sixth drove in two runs, giving the Oles the 3-2 win. Steve Ryan (Sr, South St. Paul, MN) led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a Mike Ludwig (Jr, Blaine, MN) single. Joe Pavelko's (So, Richfield, MN) sacrifice bunt set the stage for Norsten's heroics. Norsten drove the 3-1 pitch into right-field, scoring Ryan and Ludwig, and giving the Oles the 3-2 lead.
Ludwig also scored in the second inning on Matt Dean's (Fy, Apple Valley, MN) bases loaded walk.
The Oles held onto a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth. Concordia jumped ahead on a one out, bases loaded single, giving the Cobbers a 2-1 lead.
Aaron Koppen (Sr, Pine City, MN) went the distance and picked up the win for the Oles. Koppen allowed only two runs, on three hits, while striking out ten Cobbers.
In the second game, the Oles jumped out to a two run lead in the first and never looked back.
Brian Sprout (Sr, Lake City, MN) was beaned to led off the game and Dan LaManna (Sr, South St. Paul, MN) followed with a single. After a Ryan walk loaded the bases, Ludwig drove in two runs with single of his own.
The Oles increased their lead to 4-0 in the third. Ryan led off the stanza with a single and moved to third on a Pavelko single. With two outs, Joe Hammond (Sr, Nellsville, WI) and Lars Finanger (Sr, Decorah, Iowa) delivered RBI singles, scoring Ryan and Pavelko.
The Oles added three more runs in the sixth. LaManna led off with one of his five hits on the day, and later scored on Ryan's single. After Ludwig drew a walk, Pavelko stroked a double to the right-center gap driving in Ryan and Ludwig.
JJ Jasperson (So, Duluth, MN) was commanding on the hill, guiding the Oles to their third shut-out win in four conference games. Jasperson allowed no runs, only two hits, and struck out six to pick up the win.
LaManna led the offense going 5 for 5 with two doubles, two runs, and one RBI. Ryan also chipped in a 3 for 4 day with two runs and one RBI.
With the sweep the Oles improved to 11-7 overall and 4-0 in MIAC conference play. The Oles will travel to Macalaster to play the Scots on Saturday at 2:30. The next home game will be against Hamline on Sunday at 2:30.
