Oles drop two to Tommies, then bounce back and beat Scots
April 15, 2002
The St. Olaf Fastpitch team took on the nationally ranked Univeristy of St. Thomas on Friday. Despite their valiant effort, the Oles fell 6-0 and 3-0. On Saturday the Oles traveled to St. Paul to take on Macalester College. It was there that the Oles took home their first two conference wins. The Oles had a hard time stringing together hits on Friday. St. Thomas pitching was tough and the defense was solid. Tommimes bats were as strong as the defense. They jumped on the Oles right away and scored three runs in the first inning. The Tommies took the first game 6-0.
In the second game there was superb defense all around with no errors committed by either team. There was no more than one hit per inning and the game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. It was then that the Tommies bats came out big, scoring 3 runs on three hits. The Oles couldn't make it happen in the bottom of the inning and fell to the Tommies 3-0.
On Saturday, the Oles took on Macalester College in St. Paul. Once again the Oles defense was solid, led by pitcher, Melissa Ohm (So. Rochester, Minn.). Carrie Cooley (Sr. Villard, Minn.) scored the first Oles run on a double by Rachel Colson (Jr. Oak Park, Calif.). Molly Robinson (Jr. Northfield, Minn.) knocked in Lindsey Bonine (So. St. Paul, Minn.) ripped about triple and was knocked in by Molly Robinson (Jr. Northfield, Minn.) in the seventh. Two runs was all the Oles needed with their tough defense. They beet the Scots 2-0.
The Scots scored first in the second game, but the Oles came back strong. The Oles rallied in the fifth inning and scored six runs on five hits and two errors errors committed by Macalester. Grete Christenson (Sr. Springfield, Va.) pitched outstanding and held the Scots to five hits as the defense kept them scoreless again. The Oles improved their record to 2-4 with a 7-0 win.
The Oles take on Luther College in a non-conference matchup on Monday, April 15 at 4:00 with the home field advantage. The Oles next conference game is Tuesday, April 16 where they play Bethel College in St. Paul at 4:00.
