Oles split against the Scots
April 16, 2002
One day after pulling out a 5-2 come from behind victory, the Oles were handed their first home loss in three seasons, a 20-3 defeat by the Macalaster Scots.
On Saturday, Ole pitcher Charlie Ruud (So, Cannon Falls, MN) held the Scots to two runs and picked up his second win of the conference season.
After falling behind 2-1 in the fourth inning, Lars Finanger (Sr, Decorah, Iowa) singled home Dan Norsten (So, Eagen, MN), tying the game at two apiece. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Norsten singled and moved to third on Joe Hammond's (Sr, Nellsville, WI) double.
Brad Baglien (So, Arden Hills, MN) led off the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the season. Steve Ryan (Sr, South St. Paul, MN) followed Baglien's homer with a double and moved to third on Mike Ludwig's (Sr, Blaine, MN) sacrifice fly. Joe Pavelko (So, Richfield, MN) then drew a one out walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a Norsten strike out, Hammond delivered a two out single, bringing home both Ryan and Pavelko and increasing the Ole lead to 5-2.
Pavelko gave the Oles an early lead in the second inning with his first homer of the season.
Ruud struck out the side in the top of the seventh to preserve the win. The right-hander finished the first game of the twinbill, issuing only four hits and one walk, while striking out seven Scots.
Hammond went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single and a double and two RBI's to lead the Ole attack. Baglien and Ryan also had two hits and Pavelko had one while scoring two runs.
With the win the Oles improved to 5-0 in conference and 12-7 overall.
After a rain delay pushed the second game of the doubleheader to Sunday, the Scots pummeled the Oles early and often enroute to a 20-3 victory.
Five Ole pitchers, including four on Sunday, were knocked up for 19 Scot hits and 20 earned runs.
The offense did little to support their staff, coming through with only eight hits and three runs. On Sunday, Macalaster starting pitcher, Steve Derrington, allowed only two runs on six hits and issued no walks, while striking out five to pick up the win.
Macalaster's offense consisted of three home runs, five doubles, and ten singles. The Scots scored six runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to pull away from the Oles.
With the loss the 5-1 Oles move into sole possession of second place to the 6-0 first place Tommies. The Oles moved their scheduled Sunday doubleheader against Hamline to Tuesday, April 16th at 2:30. On Wednesday, the Oles lock horns with the Tommies in a doubleheader between the co-MIAC favorites.
