St. Olaf College places 17th nationally, leads MIAC schools in Sears Cup

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) has a strong showing in the 2001-02 Division III Sears Directors' Cup Final Winter Standings. Four MIAC institutions placed in the top 50, and 11 out of 13 conference schools received points in the standings.
St. Olaf College is leading the MIAC tied for 17th place with 298 points. Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., are close behind in 29th and 30th place (269 and 266.5 points), respectively.
The final winter standings include the sports of women's and men's basketball, ice hockey, swimming and indoor track and field; men's wrestling; and fencing, rifle and skiing. Points are awarded on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports, including 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.

The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
