Mens Baseball splits with Saint Marys
April 22, 2002
On Saturday, the Oles split their conference twinbill with the St. Mary's Cardinals, dropping the first game 8-2 and winning the second 10-3.
In the first game, the Cardinals capitalized on two Ole errors and exploded for four runs in the top of the second inning off starting pitcher Aaron Koppen (Sr, Pine City, MN). Catcher Seth Pugh, left fielder Aaron Smolinski, and second baseman Tony Cicalello each had RBI singles in the inning for the Cardinals.
The Oles couldn't hold on after jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brad Baglien (So, Arden Hills, MN) singled home Brian Sprout (Sr, Lake City, MN) for the first run, and Joe Pavelko (So, Richfield, MN) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Dan LaManna (Sr, South St. Paul, MN) for the second.
Cardinal pitcher Eric Williamson allowed only two runs on five hits through seven innings of work. After scattering four hits in the first, the left-hander surrendered only one hit over the final six innings.
In the second game, the Oles scored runs in all but the fourth inning and used eleven hits to defeat the Cardinals 10-3.
Baglien lead the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's. His one out single in the bottom of the first scored Sprout from second and gave the Oles a 1-0 lead. Steve Ryan (Sr, South St. Paul, MN) went 2-for-4 and had 2 RBI's and Kevin Quame (Sr, Benson, MN) also had two hits.
Starting pitcher JJ Jasperson (So, Duluth, MN) picked up his third conference win allowing only four hits on no earned runs and striking out five.
With the split, the Oles moved to 10-2 in conference play and held onto their one game lead over St. Thomas. The Tommies swept Macalaster on Saturday, winning 3-2 and 1-0, and improved to 8-2. The split moved the Cardinals to 7-5 and fifth place in conference behind the 7-3 Gusties and the 6-4 Cobbers. The Tommies and Cardinals were expected to play on Sunday but the game was moved to Monday or Tuesday.
Due to snow, the Oles moved Sunday's game against Luther College to Wednesday. The Oles travel to play the 2-6 Bethel Royals on Monday at 2:30 in St. Paul.
