Women's track hosts Manitou Classic
April 24, 2002
The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team hosted the Manitou Classic this past weekend, bringing together over 600 women athletes from all divisions of competition. The meet proved to be a success, as many Oles achieved personal best records throughout the day.
Lead by co-captain Megan Daymont (Jr., Northfield, Minn.), the team took the training and turned it over for success on the track and in the field. Daymont finished a successful first in both the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run, while also running a leg on the winning 4x800 meter relay team (composed of Marit Grorud, So., Fremont, Nebr.; Becky Peterson, So., Plymouth, Minn.; Daymont; and Abby Love, So., Appleton, Wisc.). The success of Daymont and the 4x800 team inspired many of the other runners to race for their personal best records.
The Manitou Classic was also the inaugural race for the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase. April Graves (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) proved her strength in the event by finishing with a time that placed her second on the All-time Ole List. Graves, and the steeplechase event, look to be a strong race at the MIAC conference meet.
While the track runners were successful with their times, the field events also had an excellent day. The jumps were led by Lauren Topel (Jr., Shorewood, Minn.) who set personal records in both the high and long jump. The throwers also proved that they have a deep squad, with each thrower achieving personal records in at least one of the throws. Look for the field events to continue to improve in the next few weeks as they refine their individual techniques.
The Oles will take the success from their home meet to their next meet on Saturday, April 26, at the Macalaster Invitational in St. Paul beginning at 10 am.
