Ole baseball splits with UMD
March 12, 2002
The Oles dropped the first game 4-3. The Bulldogs pulled ahead in the first four innings, taking advantage of defensive errors and receiving timely hits. After falling behind, the Oles fought back, scoring three runs of their own and closing the gap on the Bulldog?s lead.
However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Oles left two runners stranded on base. After driving in one of the Oles? three runs, Brian Sprout (Sr, Lake City, Minn) hit a rocket directly at the Bulldog third baseman, ending the game.
Aaron Koppen (Sr, Pine City, Minn) started on the mound for the Oles and was credited the loss. Charlie Ruud (So, Cannon Falls, Minn) pitched three innings of scoreless relief.
The Oles defeated the Bulldogs in the second game 7-6. The bats started off hot, scoring two runs in the opening stanza. Brad Baglien (So, Arden Hills, Minn) scored the first run off a Sprout double. Sprout later scored the second run on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, the Oles increased their lead. Sprout, Mike Ludwig (Jr, Blaine, Minn), Joe Hammond (Sr, Neillsville, Wis), Dan LaManna (Sr, South St. Paul, Minn) and Lars Finanger (Sr, Decorah, Iowa) all added RBI's to the scoring barrage.
The Bulldogs rallied in the late innings, capitalizing on Ole defensive errors. With a 7-4 lead going into the sixth inning, the Bulldogs added two more runs off fielding errors. Tough pitching helped the Oles out of their late inning troubles to seal the win.
Erik Goodmanson (Sr, Albert Lea, Minn) started the second game on the hill and picked up the win.
The Oles will take a 3-1 record into their annual Southern Trip. The team will leave on March 21st and play competition in Iowa, Missouri, and Texas during the trip.
