Ole Indoor Track and Field women compete at Nationals
March 14, 2002
Two athletes from the St. Olaf College Women?s Track and Field team recently participated at the Division III National Indoor Track and Field Championship in Ada, Ohio. Megan Daymont (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) and Becky Peterson (So., Plymouth, Minn.) paced the Oles with five individual titles and a first place relay finish in the MIAC. At Nationals, Peterson competed in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60. Entering the competition Peterson was ranked 14th, and moved up to a 12th place finish overall.
Daymont entered the national meet with the best time in the nation in the 800-meter run. Daymont had automatically qualified for nationals in both the 800 and 1500-meter runs. She finished the preliminary competition with a time of 2:16.04, giving her a top seed entering the finals. In the finals, Daymont raced her lifetime best time of 2:12.54. Daymont led from the start, only to be passed with one meter left in the race, by the winner who finished in 2:12.41, proving the excellence of the competition at the national level. Daymont?s time is a new indoor school record for St. Olaf.
Both Daymont and Peterson will take their strong finishes at nationals and carry it forward into the outdoor track and field season, which begins April 6th.
