Oles drop match to Tommies

The Oles men's tennis team lost their second conference match on March 16 to a tough University of St. Thomas squad.

The Oles took one of three matches in the doubles competition. The pair from St. Thomas were too tough for the Nagel twins (So. Ottawa, IL)in the number one doubles spot, beating them 0-8. Carl Wilbur (Sr, Edina, Minn.) and Tim Smith (Sr, Eden Prarie, Minn.) won the first match for the Oles in the number two doubles spot, beating the Thommies pair, 8-5. Matt Sobieski (Jr. Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Brandon Hall (Sr, Dubuque, Iowa) couldn't take their match in the number three spot, and lost 3-8.

UST dominated in singles play as well, but the Oles did put up an honorable fight. Wilbur and Hall both took it to three games, but lost the final in a tie-breaker 6-1, 2-6, (8-10) and 6-2, 6-1, (10-8) respectively. Ted Nagel lost his match in two close games, 6-7 and 4-6. Tom Nagel took his match to a third set tie-break as well, but was defeated 6-7, 6-0, (8-10). Dan Cohen (So, St. Paul, Minn.) took the second and final match win, beating his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Tim Smith also lost his game 6-7, 0-6. The Oles next matchup is at the Wheaton Invitational in Chicago, Illinois on March 22. After that, they will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina where the will take on many schools between March 25-29.
