Oles fall in overtime

Ben Van Thorre (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) had six of his game-high 34 points in overtime as Macalester held off the Oles 93-84.

Tim Nelson (Jr., Braham, Minn.) had a three-point basket with just 3.4 seconds left in regulation as a part of his team-high 23 points to send the game to overtime.

St. Olaf led by as many as seven in the first half and by five at the break. The Oles would fall behind in the second half, before making a run at the Scots. Cory Paterson's (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) three-point basket gave St. Olaf a 73-68 lead with just over three minutes to play. Macalester scored the next eight points before Nelson tied the game.

The overtime session belonged to Mac, as the Scots scored the first five points and held on to win their eleventh conference game.

Macalester was 22-for-23 from the free throw line and 52 percent from the field. The Oles were 16-of-24 from the charity stripe and just 38 percent from the field.

Pat Russell (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) added 28 points, including 12-of-12 from the line, for the Scots. Justin Bonestroo (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Matt Hofkens (Sr., Neenah, Wis.) had 15 each for St. Olaf.

The Oles next contest is Saturday, February 2, when the host Hamline at 3 p.m.
