Jill Johnson named All-Conference Honorable Mention FEBRUARY 28, 2002 — St. Olaf College sophomore Jill Johnson (Butterfield, Minn.) was named MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention for her outstanding performance on the basketball court. Women's hockey finishes season with St. Thomas series FEBRUARY 28, 2002 — On Friday, February 22, the Oles took on the St. Thomas Tommies at the Coliseum. The Oles put forth a tremendous effort against the Tommies but lost 3-1. Ludwig named MIAC All-Conference Player FEBRUARY 28, 2002 — St. Olaf College basketball player Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) was recently named MIAC All-Conference. This season Ludwig became the 14th player in school history to reach 1000 points. Nordic Ski teams send two to NCAA Division I Nationals FEBRUARY 27, 2002 — This past weekend, the Oles ended the teams? season on a high note by competing in their final regional races at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota. Kevin Hochtl ( Sr., Vail, Colo.) took second in the 20K freestyle, and Sonja Bostrom (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) finished second in the 15k freestyle, both qualifying for the national meet in Alaska. Oles gain momentum for upcoming conference meet FEBRUARY 26, 2002 — Gaining momentum to enter this week?s conference track meet, the St. Olaf Women?s Track and Field team had a successful meet at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. The team finished 4th overall, and the 2nd through 4th places were all within 5 points of one another. Cross-country skier and St. Olaf student is one of only two Minnesotans in Paralympics FEBRUARY 26, 2002 — St. Olaf first-year student Kelly Underkofler has been cross-country skiing for 13 years -- with only one hand. Now she is in Salt Lake City to compete with other elite athletes in the Paralympic Winter Games, which began March 7. She is one of only two Minnesotans there. Swimmers and divers prove their talent at MIAC Championships FEBRUARY 26, 2002 — The accumulation of over five months of dedication and commitment came to a front as the Oles competed at the conference championship this past February 21st-23rd, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The men finished a close second behind Gustavus with 801 points, and the women finished a respectable third with 682 points. Ole women fail to win a match against UW-Lacrosse FEBRUARY 25, 2002 — The St. Olaf Women?s Tennis Team faced a strong UW-La Crosse squad on Saturday, February 23, in La Crosse, Wis. The Oles lost 9-0, but had many competitive matches. Ole men swept by Gusties FEBRUARY 25, 2002 — The St. Olaf Men's Tennis Team lost 9-0 to perennial powerhouse and nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, February 22. Cecilia's Circle brings to life women's music of Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque FEBRUARY 22, 2002 — The four women in Cecilia's Circle have a mission -- to resurrect the energy and creativity of "early music" female composers. The group will be in residence at St. Olaf, with several public performances, from March 4 to 8. Oles fight hard in playoff loss FEBRUARY 20, 2002 — The St. Olaf 2001-02 basketball season ended on Monday, February 18, in the first round of the MIAC post-season playoffs. The Oles, seeded sixth in the playoff rankings, fell to the third seed, Carleton College, 71-48 at the West Gym on Carleton's campus. Men sweep Bethel 9-0 FEBRUARY 19, 2002 — The men's tennis team picked up their first victory of the season when they defeated Bethel 9-0 on Friday, February 15th. The Oles were triumphant at each position. All eight of the team members played and contributed to the victory. Men play Alumni FEBRUARY 19, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team played in it's annual alumni meet on Friday, February 9th. The alumni that returned included Dick Kleber, Dave Nitz, Jeffrey Brown, Dan Anderson, Steve Paulsen, Jeff Nelson, Chris Martin, Chris Sheffert, Pete Nau, and Jon Campbell. We had a wonderful time of playing tennis together. Men's Nordic wins MIAC Championship, Women take 2nd FEBRUARY 19, 2002 — In the MIAC men's classic race, St.Olaf placed three racers in the top four and won the conference championship. The St.Olaf women finished second behind Gustavus but won gold and bronze in the 5K. Women's tennis drop season opener to Bethel FEBRUARY 19, 2002 — The Oles traveled to Bethel to play their first dual match of the season on Friday, February 15. St. Olaf came up on the short end of a 7-2 score. Oles play Alumnae FEBRUARY 19, 2002 — We had our annual alumnae get together. This year's team played exhibition doubles with players from past years. Alumnae who attended included: Sarah Paulsen Nygren, Beth Abdella, Kristi Carlson Stets, Kaelie River Breitan (and her husband, Dave and eleven month old son, Haden), Ann Barle Champlin, Sara Barle Aldorf, Kayse Goodell, Rebekah vanWieren, and Alyssa Derksen. We had a wonderful time playing and renewing old friendships. Oles end season with win over Carleton FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — Matt Hofkens (Sr., Neenah, Wis.) was eight-of-12 from the field, scoring 19 points, leading St. Olaf over Carleton 79-75 in the last game of the 2001-02 season. Women fall to Knights, look forward to MIAC Playoffs FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — In their last regular-season game of the 2001-02 season, the St. Olaf basketball team (11-11 MIAC, 13-12 overall) lost to the Carleton College Knights (18-4 MIAC, 20-5 overall), 86-49 on Saturday, February 16. Women split series with Bethel FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — On Wednesday, February 6, the women's hockey team traveled to Fridley to take on the Bethel Royals, and the teams returned to Northfied for play on Saturday, February 9. The Oles split with Royals winning 2-1 and losing 2-1. Oles win three races at UW-Eau Claire FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — On Saturday, February 16, the St. Olaf men's track and field team traveled to Eau Claire for the Border Battle Classic. The Oles won two individual events and one relay on the afternoon. Women run well at U of M Open FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — Competing at the University of Minnesota?s Parent?s Day Open, the St. Olaf women fought tough and proved that they can compete with any level of athlete. Though there were many highlights of the day, the concluding 4x400 relay captured the excitement felt throughout the meet. Trailing the U of Minnesota?s team going into the final leg, the Oles overtook the Gophers for the first place finish. Upcoming conference to explore the 'challenges of affluence' in a global world FEBRUARY 18, 2002 — The second annual Globalization and Social Responsibility conference at St. Olaf College Feb. 22 and 23 will address provocative, relevant questions in the wake of Sept. 11: What are the challenges of affluence? And what role should the United States play in a world whose borders and peoples increasingly are linked? Janet Reno delights students with her self-deprecating wit FEBRUARY 15, 2002 — Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, a candidate for the governorship of Florida, talked about the elderly, abortion rights and the duties of citizenship when she visited St. Olaf College in February. But it was her recent appearance on Saturday Night Live that caught the students' interest, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Open house on Feb. 20 kicks off Relay for Life cancer-awareness campaign FEBRUARY 14, 2002 — On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the American Cancer Society House will kick off its team recruitment for the Relay for Life, which will be held on Manitou Field in May. At an open house from 4 to 8 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Room 144, the group will distribute information about how to organize teams that will raise money for cancer research. Daymont named MIAC Track Athlete of the Week FEBRUARY 14, 2002 — St. Olaf College junior Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) won two individual events, and ran a leg on the winning 4 X 400 M relay team (4:10.47) at the Saint Mary's University Invitational on Saturday, February 9. Oles one step closer to MIAC playoff berth FEBRUARY 14, 2002 — On Wednesday, February 13, the St. Olaf women's basketball team defeated the College of St. Catherine 77-64, improving their record to 11-10 in the MIAC and 13-11 overall. The win puts the Oles in good position for a post-season playoff spot. Ole Men perform well at St. Marys FEBRUARY 13, 2002 — Last Saturday, February 9, the St. Olaf men?s track and field team squared off against the University of Dubuque and St. Mary's in an unscored meet. The Oles dominated the middle and longer distance events but were challenged by a tough Dubuque squad in the sprints, jumps, and throws. Oles drop game to Tommies FEBRUARY 12, 2002 — Mark Buri had 23 points, eight assists and six steals as the University of St. Thomas won their eleventh game in a row at home, downing St. Olaf men's basketball team 91-75. Oles snap losing streak with win over Augsburg FEBRUARY 12, 2002 — Justin Bonestroo (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) matched a career-high with 21 points in the Oles 78-70 win over Augsburg Monday night, February 11. Bonestroo, who also had 11 rebounds, set his career best in Saturday's loss to St. Thomas on February 9. Oles run well at St. Marys FEBRUARY 11, 2002 — Reuniting the whole St. Olaf Women?s Track and Field team after many were traveling abroad, the women proved that they have the ingredients to have a successful season. The Oles were strong all across the board at the St. Mary?s Invitational as the women found success in each event. Oles stuggle against the Tommies FEBRUARY 11, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team (10 -10 MIAC, 12-11 overall) lost to the University of St. Thomas 81-39 on Saturday, February 9, at home. St. Thomas (17-3 MIAC, 19-4 overall) is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the MIAC, while St. Olaf is tied for sixth with Concordia. Hometown swimming rivals go head to head FEBRUARY 11, 2002 — The St. Olaf swimming and diving team took on their neighbors from across the river this past Saturday, February 9, in what proved to be one of the most exciting meets of the year. Although the men easily won, the women?s competition was far more intense. Smith gains 600th win in Johnnies win over Oles FEBRUARY 7, 2002 — St. John's University was a steamy 13-for-21 from three-point range in the Johnnies 90-76 win over the St. Olaf men's basketball team at Sexton Arena in Collegeville. The win was the 600th career win for St. John's coach Jim Smith. Oles tough defense couldnt stop Blazers FEBRUARY 7, 2002 — On Wednesday, February 6, the St. Olaf women's basketball team (10-9 MIAC 12-10 overall) lost to the College of Saint Benedict at home, 73-60. The Blazers are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the MIAC with St. Thomas and Carleton. Oles tie Gusties FEBRUARY 6, 2002 — February 1-2, the Oles faced the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties. Going into the game the Oles were ready for a tough game against reigning MIAC champions and the number one team in the nation for Division III. What was expecting to be a blowout turned into the biggest upset in St. Olaf women's hockey history with a 1-1 tie. Oles race at Gustie Invite FEBRUARY 6, 2002 — Last Thursday, January 31, the St. Olaf men's track and field team competed at the Gustie Rectangular. Because the unscored meet took place over St. Olaf's interim break, the Oles raced with a split squad. Even with their shortened team they managed to win ten events from their Gustavus and Macalaster rivals. Oles beat Hamline FEBRUARY 6, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team defeated the Pipers of Hamline University on Saturday, February 2. The 57-38 win puts the Oles (10-8 MIAC, 12-9 overall) in a tie for fifth place in the MIAC rankings, along with Saint Mary's University. Oles lose heartbreaker to Hamline FEBRUARY 4, 2002 — B.J. Rossow (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) and Tyler Petrich (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) combined to shoot seven-of-11 from three-point range leading Hamline to their first conference victory of the year, a 73-72 decision over the struggling Oles. Oles dominate over the Tommies FEBRUARY 4, 2002 — The St. Olaf swimming and diving team traveled to the St. Thomas University this past Friday, Febuary 1, to take on the Tommies in a conference dual meet. Both the men and women were successful against the Tommies, with final scores of 69-39 and 73-36, respectively. Oles fall in overtime FEBRUARY 1, 2002 — Ben Van Thorre (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) had six of his game-high 34 points in overtime as Macalester held off the Oles 93-84. Oles drop two games to St. Benedict FEBRUARY 1, 2002 — This past weekend, January 25-26, the Ole women competed against the College of Saint Benedict. St. Olaf lost both games with scores of 6-1 and 3-1. |
