Oles drop two games to St. Benedict
February 1, 2002
This past weekend, January 25-26, the Ole women competed against the College of Saint Benedict. St. Olaf lost both games with scores of 6-1 and 3-1.
On Friday night, January 25, the Oles traveled to St. Cloud to take on the Blazers. The Blazers scored three goals in the first period. After that the Oles stepped it up a notch and successfully kept the second period scoreless. However, the third period proved to be a challenge as well as the Blazers put three more pucks between the pipes. But the Oles did not give up. Late in the third period, the Oles had a one-man advantage with the power play and Sarah Ray (So, St. Paul, Minn.) put the puck in the net with a shot from the point. Unfortunately, the goal was waved off because an Ole was in the crease. But, the Oles did it once and they could do it again. A few seconds later, Ray took another shot from the point and scored. Despite the loss, the Oles put forth a good effort. The effort of two Oles stood out, Ray and Sarah Johnson (Fr, Albert Lea, Minn.).
On Saturday night, the Blazers traveled to Northfield. Ready for another chance, the Oles played an incredible game. A scoreless first period kept the intensity high. The second period was much of the same; however, the Blazers were the first on the board late in the period, scoring at 15:51. Going into the third period down by one, the Oles answered back right away. Kate Barnett (FY., Burnsville, Minn.) scored two minutes into the period with the assists from Erin Baxter (FY., Rosemount, Minn.) and Ray. Unfortunately, the Blazers scored again at 8:08 in the third period on a breakaway. The Oles kept fighting however. In a final attempt to tie the game, they pulled goaltender Kerry Rollwagen (FY., Mendota Heights, Minn.) for the player advantage. Unfortunately, the Blazers scored an empty net goal with thirty seconds left in the game. The Oles were disappointed in their loss inspite of a tremendous effort. Oles that stood out for their extreme effort Saturday night included Nadia Nickersen (Sr., Powell, Wyo.) and Rollwagen who had 41 saves for the night.
The Oles next games are against the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties. They play Friday night, February 1, at 7:00 PM at the Northfield Ice Arena and Saturday afternoon, February 2, at Gustavus at 2:00 PM.
