Oles beat Hamline
February 6, 2002
The St. Olaf basketball team defeated the Pipers of Hamline University on Saturday, February 2. The 57-38 win puts the Oles (10-8 MIAC, 12-9 overall) in a tie for fifth place in the MIAC rankings, along with Saint Mary's University.
Getting off to slow starts, both teams struggled to put points on the board during the first ten minutes of the game. With nine minutes remaining in the first half, St. Olaf forced the Pipers to turn the ball over and connected on several shots, while Hamline continued to struggle from the field. The Pipers shot only 16% from the field and the Oles led 30-12 at the break.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers, but St. Olaf came out in the second half and capitalized on the mistakes made by Hamline against the Ole full court pressure. "Our full court pressure early in the second half forced them to turn the ball over and helped us secure the lead," stated Coach Buresh. The Oles also controlled the boards, again out-rebounding their opponent. The Oles grabbed 45 rebounds in the contest, compared to 33 for Hamline.
Sara Erickson (Jr, Cambridge, Minn.) came off the bench and had a career- high 15 points for the Oles, going three for six from the three point line and six for 11 from the field. Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) scored 12 points from inside, and grabbed eight rebounds while Erickson collected seven rebounds. Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) had six assists in the contest for the Oles. Jessica Barrett led the Pipers in scoring with 16 points.
St. Olaf, still in their long string of home games, next faces the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday, February 6, at the Skoglund Athletic Center. Game time is 7:30 PM.
