Oles race at Gustie Invite
February 6, 2002
Last Thursday, January 31, the St. Olaf men's track and field team competed at the Gustie Rectangular. Because the unscored meet took place over St. Olaf's interim break, the Oles raced with a split squad. Even with their shortened team they managed to win ten events from their Gustavus and Macalaster rivals.
The black and gold thinclads dominated the middle distance events with victories in the 800m, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m. Andrew Cole (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) started the barrage of Ole victories by excelerating ahead of the field to win the 800m in 2:00.98. Jeff Boerner (Sr, Corcoran, Minn) continued the onslaught, claiming victory in the 1000m in 2:37.17. Bert Pinsonneault (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) finished the 1500m in 4:18.85 in front of teammate Malcolm Richard's (Fy, Minneapolis, Minn) second place performance. Peder Arneson (So, Montevideo, Minn) completed the Oles sweep outpacing teammates Chris Coffey (Jr, Dubuque, Iowa) and Josh Steffen (Sr, Lake Geneva, Wis) enroute to winning the 3000m in 9:00.51.
Not to be outdone, the sprinters turned in victories in the 400m, 55m hurdles, and the 4x400m relay. Matt Wieland (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) finished the 400m in 52.90 for first place and Mark Murakami (Sr, Chicago, Ill) outpaced teammate Cory Dingels (Sr, Gibbon, Minn) to win the 55m hurdles in 8.38. The 4x400 relay team of Wieland, Dingels, Murakami, and Ryan Noreen (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) tore through the race in 3:27.27 to claim the victory.
The Oles were equally as impressive in the jumping events. Dingels automatically qualified for Indoor Nationals in the high jump after leaping 2.08m in picking up the win. Dingels also won the long jump with a 6.75m performance, took second to Murakami in the 55m hurdles, and ran the second leg of the victorious 4x400m relay team. In the pole vault, Eric Droher (Sr, North Oaks, Minn) went 14-00ft to tie for first place and Evan Sundquist (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn) took second in the triple jump after going 12.34m.
The Oles will lace up for the St. Mary's Invitational at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 9.
