Ole Men perform well at St. Marys

Last Saturday, February 9, the St. Olaf men?s track and field team squared off against the University of Dubuque and St. Mary's in an unscored meet. The Oles dominated the middle and longer distance events but were challenged by a tough Dubuque squad in the sprints, jumps, and throws.
The Oles middle and long distance runners claimed first and second place finishes in all of their races. Andrew Cole (Sr., North Mankato, Minn) pulled away from the field, winning the 5000m in 15:34. Christopher Coffey (Jr, Dubuque, Iowa) finished second in 15:49 and was closely followed by four other teammates. In the 1500m, Kelly Fulton (FY., Billings, Mont) finished first in 4:11, four seconds ahead of teammate Josh Steffen (Sr., Lake Geneva, Wis). Rob Hillard (Jr., Columbia, Mo.) won the 1000m in 2:35, leading a threesome of Oles that included second and third place finishers Albert Pinsonneault (Sr., St. Paul, Minn) and Mark Murakami (Sr., Chicago, Ill). Matt Wieland (Sr., Stillwater, Minn) won the 600m, crossing the line in 1:25, less than a half a second in front of teammate Jeff Boerner (Sr., Corcoran, Minn).
The Oles had their hands full against Dubuque in the sprinting, throwing, and jumping events. While Dubuque captured victories in seven events, the Oles claimed three of their own and added four second place finishes. Cory Dingels (Sr, Gibbon, Minn) won two of his three jumping events, taking first in the high jump with a leap of 6-4 and the long jump in 23-1 1/4. Dingels also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 45-1. Ryan Noreen (Jr., Bloomington, Minn) edged out his competition in the 200m, winning in 22.68. Noreen also finished second in the 55m in 6.60. Eric Doher (Sr., North Oaks, Minn) finished second in the pole vault going 13-7 1/4 and Gaute Johnson (Jr., Akershus, Norway) claimed second in the 400m in 52.96.
The Oles will travel to Eau Claire and lace up their spikes in the Border Battle this Saturday, February 16, at 1:00 PM.
