In their first contest of 2002, the St. Olaf women?s basketball team beat the Bethel College Royals 70-53 at home on Wednesday, January 2 in an important conference match-up.

While St. Olaf came away with the win, Bethel actually lead for most of the game. At the end of the first half, they were ahead 31-28, shooting 48 percent from the field in comparison to the St. Olaf percentage of 35. Things improved for St. Olaf offensively in the second half. Shooting percentages for the two teams essentially switched; St. Olaf shot 47 percent, and Bethel dropped to 20 percent for the half. The Royals were still able to hang on to their lead until the last five minutes of play, when St. Olaf went on a 22-2 game-winning run. Both Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) and Sara Erickson (Jr, Cambridge, Minn.) came off the bench to play well from the outside, hitting some crucial outside shots to give the Oles momentum in the final minutes of play.

In team totals, the Oles out rebounded the Royals 48 to 26. St. Olaf once again exhibited their strenghth of bench: each of the 11 players that received playing time scored at least one field goal. Mundahl was the leading scorer, contributing 17 points and going three for six from the three point line. Senior wing players Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.) and Liz Woodrow (Sr, Aitkin, Minn.) both had three assists and 13 and 10 points, respectively.
