Strong second half helps St. Olaf edge Macalester
JANUARY 31, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team defeated the Macalester Scots at home on Wednesday, January 30. The 70-60 win puts them in a three-way tie for 5th place in the conference with Saint Mary's University and Concordia College in a tight race for MIAC playoff positions.

Ole women put forth-best effort at two-day meet
JANUARY 29, 2002 — The St. Olaf women?s swimming and diving team traveled to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, January 25-26, to compete in the "Get to the Point Invite". The Oles were faced with the best the Midwest had to offer, and finished seventh out of eleven teams. UW-Lacrosse won the competition with UW-Stevens Point coming in second.

Bethel beats Oles
JANUARY 29, 2002 — Drew Brodin (Jr., Vadinais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) had 15 points and Eric Robertson (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) 14 as the Royals beat St. Olaf 67-52.

Oles win triangular meet at Carleton
JANUARY 29, 2002 — Friday,January 25, the St. Olaf men's indoor track and field team crossed the Cannon River to Carleton's Goodhue Recreation Center and won the Carleton Triangular. The Oles claimed eight first place finishes and tallied 144 points to easily outscore Hamline and Carleton.

Oles trounce Bethel
JANUARY 29, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team (8-8 MIAC, 10-9 overall) traveled to Bethel College (3-12 MIAC, 3-15 overall) on Monday, January 28, and came away with a decisive victory, winning 85-55.

Oles lose battle for 6th place in MIAC standings
JANUARY 28, 2002 — On Saturday, January 26, the St. Olaf basketball team ( 7-8 MIAC, 9-9 overall) fell to the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (8-7 MIAC, 8-10 overall), 63-58.

Hvistendahl leads Ole men to second place finish
JANUARY 28, 2002 — Jake Hvistendahl (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) won two individual events and led off two champion relays to lead the Oles to a second place finish, this past Friday and Saturday, January 25-26, at the competitive "Get to the Point Invitational" in Steven?s Point, Wisconsin. The Oles finished second to South Dakota State.

Oles fall to Concordia in final minute once again
JANUARY 28, 2002 — Robb Flint's (Sr., Dilworth, Minn.) running jumper and free throws with under a minute to play enabled Concordia-Moorhead College to hold on to beat St. Olaf 78- 73.

Oles defeat Cardinals 65-42
JANUARY 25, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team (7-7 MIAC, 9-8 overall) traveled to Winona, Minn. on Wednesday, January 23, and defeated Saint Mary's University 65-42 in a key conference contest. The Cardinals (9-5 MIAC, 11-5 overall), currently in fifth place in the MIAC standings, beat the Oles 68-58 in the teams' first meeting of the season.

Oles ski well over weekend
JANUARY 24, 2002 — This past weekend, the St. Olaf Nordic ski team competed in their first two of eight NCAA Division I national qualifying races. The team is off to a great start with many individuals receiving solid NCAA qualifying points.

Oles drop another, fall 87-84 to Cardinals
JANUARY 24, 2002 — Nick Michaels (Jr., Dyer, Ind.) had four threes in the second half leading Saint Mary's over St. Olaf 87-84. Michaels was five-of-seven for the game from the arc and finished with a game-high 23 points.

Oles defeat nationally ranked River Falls
JANUARY 24, 2002 — On Tuesday, January 22, the St. Olaf men's hockey team played a rescheduled game against the nationally ranked UW-River Falls Falcons. The Oles played a terrific game, defeating the Falcons 4-3.

Ole turnovers prove costly in loss to Knights
JANUARY 22, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team traveled across town to play conference rival Carleton College on Wednesday, January 16 and lost 67-52.

Freeman Foundation donates $1.3 million to strengthen Asian studies at St. Olaf
JANUARY 22, 2002 — St. Olaf College, a perennial leader in international study, has received a grant of nearly $1.3 million from the Freeman Foundation that will support a new faculty position in Asian politics, cutting-edge technology for teaching and learning languages, and four other initiatives.

Oles place in Cornell/ Matman Invite
JANUARY 22, 2002 — Friday, January 18, the St. Olaf wrestling team traveled to Mt. Vernon, Iowa to participate in the two-day Cornell/ Matman Invitational. The Oles wrestled well despite their injury plagued lineup.

Mens track competes in MSU Open
JANUARY 21, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's indoor team competed at the MSU-Mankato Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Oles turned in respectable individual and relay team performances throughout the course of the meet.

Oles battle hard but lose to Auggies 5-4
JANUARY 21, 2002 — On Thursday, January 17, the St. Olaf women?s hockey team faced the Augsburg Auggies in Minneapolis. The Oles lost the close fought battle by a narrow 5-4 score.

Dont be blah! Make winter fun!
JANUARY 21, 2002 — As part of the "Good Things to Know" seminar series, St. Olaf faculty and staff are invited to the Valhalla Room at 12 noon when Arleen Fitzgerald, an employee assistance program representative, discusses "Making Winter Fun." Men are Victorious While Women Suffer Second Loss
JANUARY 21, 2002 — The St. Olaf swimming and diving team traveled to St. Cloud, Friday, January 19, to take on the St. Cloud State University Huskies. The men pulled off an easy victory with a final score of 158-81, but the Ole women narrowly lost to the Huskies with a final score of 129-110.

Ludwig reaches 1000 points in Oles loss to Gusties
JANUARY 21, 2002 — Chad Henke (Sr., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East) had 21 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, leading Gustavus over St. Olaf 84-58.

Oles suffer tough loss with Gusties
JANUARY 21, 2002 — On Saturday, January 19 the St. Olaf women's basketball team dropped a close one conference opponent Gustavus Adolphus College, 64-57.

St.Olaf beats Augsburg
JANUARY 17, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team defeated conference opponent Augsburg College 62-48 at St. Olaf on Saturday, January 12.

Oles fall to Carleton
JANUARY 17, 2002 — Matt Stangl had a career-high 23 points, while Steve Nuessle had 16 and 11 boards as the Knights defeated St. Olaf 66-60 at Carleton's West Gymnasium in Northfield.

Womens hockey swept by St. Marys
JANUARY 17, 2002 — This past weekend the Ole women competed against the Cardinals from St. Mary's University (SMU). St. Olaf was shut out both games 6-0 and 2-0.

Oles continue to impress with win over Blugolds
JANUARY 15, 2002 — After an easy win over the Scotts, the Oles carried the momentum to the next day, Saturday, January 12, when they took on the Blugolds from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Blugolds have provided a high level of competition for the Oles and the meets have always been very close.

Oles beat the Wildcats
JANUARY 15, 2002 — In MIAC conference play, the St. Olaf basketball team played the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul on Monday, January 14. The Oles played a great second half to come back from a six point halftime deficit and win the game 68-56.

Oles have full week of Wrestling
JANUARY 15, 2002 — This past week has been jam-packed with wrestling action. On Wednesday, January 9, the Oles traveled across the state border to River Falls, Wisconsin to meet in a triangular competition with both the University of Wisconsin-OshKosh and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Oles bring in the New Year with a convincing win
JANUARY 15, 2002 — The benefits of the intense winter training done by the St. Olaf men?s and women?s swimming and diving team were shown on Friday, January 11, against conference opponent Macalester. Both men and women dominated the Scotts on their way to 144-71 and 151-58 wins, respectively.

The Oles shine in their first indoor meet of the season
JANUARY 14, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's track and field team opened its 2002 indoor season on Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Northwest Open. A group of Oles competed at the non-scored meet that included other Division. I, II, and III competitors from around the state.

Former star player, assistant coach at St. Olaf to lead women's volleyball team
JANUARY 14, 2002 — St. Olaf athletic director Cindy Book has stepped down as women's head volleyball coach, naming former Ole standout Traci Rasmussen-Cook as her successor.

Oles end skid, rout Auggies 86-65
JANUARY 14, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's basketball team had more points, three pointers, assists and field goals in the first half of Saturday's 86-65 win over Augsburg than it did in the entire game in their loss to St. Thomas.

Ole women fall to St. Thomas
JANUARY 14, 2002 — The St. Olaf basketball team fell to St. Thomas on Wednesday, January 9 on the road by a score of 79-44. St. Thomas currently leads the race for the conference title and is undefeated in MIAC play.

Ole women lose close one to Blazers
JANUARY 10, 2002 — The St. Olaf womenís basketball team traveled to St. Joseph on Monday, January 7 to play the Blazers of St. Benedict in a MIAC conference contest. The Oles (6-5, 4-4 MIAC) played tough, but were defeated 66-62 by a talented Blazer team.

Oles lose battle with UW-Stevens Point
JANUARY 10, 2002 — On Wednesday, January 9, the Ole women had their first game since winter break. They hosted the UW-Steven?s Point Pointers at Fairbault Ice Arena and lost the game 5-0.

Oles were cold as ice against the Tommies
JANUARY 10, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's basketball team may spend their day off Thursday checking the dimensions of the goal at the east end of Skoglund Athletic Center. It was at that basket that the Oles could muster just 11 points shooting only 11.8 percent on 4-34 field goals.

Oles beat Stout in OT
JANUARY 8, 2002 — The Oles played Saturday, January 5, against the Stout Blue Devils. Garret Hasti (So, St. Louis Park, Minn.) stopped 27 shots and Dan Norsten (So. Eagan, Minn.) scored an overtime winner to give the Oles a hard earned 2-1 victory.

Oles drop third straight
JANUARY 8, 2002 — NORTHFIELD, MINN.- For the third time this season, the St. Olaf men's basketball team delivered an entertaining game in front of a healthy crowd at Skoglund Athletic Center. Unfortunately, the Oles came up short with a 63-56 loss to St. John's University.

Ole grapplers host North Country Invite
JANUARY 7, 2002 — Saturday, January 5, St. Olaf hosted an enormous field of fifteen teams for the North Country Invitational. More than 150 wrestlers participated in the tournament and provided hours of fast-paced wrestling for the few wrestling enthusiasts that came out for this event.

JANUARY 7, 2002 — Macalester's Ben Van Thorre (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) had a rebound basket as time expired to lead the Scots of Macalester over St. Olaf 76-74.

Oles hold on to beat Scots
JANUARY 7, 2002 — In MIAC conference action, the St. Olaf women?s basketball team (6-4, 4-3 MIAC) defeated the Macalester College Scots by a score of 64-60.

Oles blown out by Royals
JANUARY 4, 2002 — Andy Gilbert had 23 points and seven rebounds, leading Bethel to a 90-57 thumping of St. Olaf College Wednesday night, January 3. Gilbert had 12 points in the first six minutes propelling the Royals to a 17-3 lead.

Ole women comeback to beat Bethel
JANUARY 4, 2002 — In their first contest of 2002, the St. Olaf women?s basketball team beat the Bethel College Royals 70-53 at home on Wednesday, January 2 in an important conference match-up.

Women's Hockey Wins First Conference Game
JANUARY 4, 2002 — Wednesday, November 14, the Ole women had their first conference match up against the Hamline Pipers in St. Paul at the Coliseum. With two goals from Sophmore Sarah Ray and one bye First Year Kate Barnett, the Oles were able to beat the Pipers 3-2.
