Oles lose on last second shot

Macalester's Ben Van Thorre (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) had a rebound basket as time expired to lead the Scots of Macalester over St. Olaf 76-74. Van Thorre's putback came after the Scot's Pat Russell missed a jumper from the wing.
The Oles came back from a ten-point deficit with 3:07 to play and tied the game with 13 seconds on the clock when junior Mike Ludwig (Blaine, Minn.) hit two free-throws to tie the game at 74.
Macalester led by three at half, 42-39.
Macalester's Doug Benson (Sr., Maple Plain, Minn./Orono-Long Lake) led all scorers with 21 points. Benson was just four-of-five from the field, but was 13-of-15 from the charity stripe. He also corralled 13 rebounds.
The Oles were led by Matt Hofkens (Sr., Neenah, Wis.) and Ludwig. Each had 15 points in the loss. Ludwig added nine rebounds as well. Tim Nelson (Jr., Braham, Minn.) and Kevin Jaunich (Jr., Delano, Minn.) both contributed 12 points.
All five players who scored for Macalester finished in double-digits. Pat Russell (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) added 19, Ryan Gerry (Sr., Cave Creek, Ariz.)13, Adam Denny (So., Preston, Minn./Filmore Central) 11 and Van Thorre had 12.
With the loss, the Oles drop to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in MIAC play.
The Oles host Saint John's University on Monday night at Skoglund Athletic Center. Game time is set for 7:30.
