Oles beat Stout in OT
January 8, 2002
It was an interesting weekend for the St Olaf men?s hockey team. The Oles were scheduled to play UW-River Falls on Friday night, January 4, and then travel to Menomonie, WI to take on UW-Stout.
On Friday, after a 45-minute delay, the game was cancelled due to no referees and was rescheduled to be played on Tuesday, January 22, in River Falls, Wis at 7:00 p.m. The Oles used the three hours of ice to their advantage holding an inter-squad scrimmage. The Black and Gold game lasted for just two periods and the Oles looked sharp even after the two week vacation. Coach Sean Goldsworthy thought it was unfortunate that the game was cancelled but was happy to have the opportunity to gain extra scrimmage time. "I'm disappointed that were no referees, but I'm glad that we could work on some of our systems." said the fifth year coach. Although disappointed in not getting to watch the Oles take on the fourth ranked team in America for Division III, the fans seemed to enjoy the Black Gold game. "It was really fun to see the guys play, even if it was against each other," commented First Year Karen Frevert. "At least we got to watch hockey tonight." The Oles were at it again Saturday, January 5, this time taking on the Stout Blue Devils. Garret Hasti (So, St. Louis Park, Minn.) stopped 27 shots and Dan Norsten (So. Eagan, Minn.) scored an overtime winner to give the Oles a hard earned 2-1 victory.
The game was fast paced and hard hitting. The otherwise reserved Stout crowd was there in force, which added to the intensity of the game. It was end to end action with each team keeping it scoreless through two periods of play.
Then just seconds into the third period, Ole Jordan Bronce (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored first on a pass from Nick Hanson (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.). "Hanson just gave me a great pass and I shot it hard", noted Bronce. The Blue Devils would come back tying the game on tipped shot that found its way past Hasti. The teams exchanged scoring opportunities for the rest of the third period. It was tied at 1-1 and headed to a five minute overtime period.
The overtime period didn?t last long. It took just 14 seconds for Norsten to net the game winner. Hanson got in behind one defense men and feathered a pass over to Norsten who fired past the goalie.
The Oles next game is against Lawrence University on Friday, January 11, at 7:00 pm and on Saturday, January 12, at 2:00 pm.
