Oles were cold as ice against the Tommies
January 10, 2002
The St. Olaf men's basketball team may spend their day off Thursday checking the dimensions of the goal at the east end of Skoglund Athletic Center. It was at that basket that the Oles could muster just 11 points shooting only 11.8 percent on 4-34 field goals. They also were dismal from three point range making only one of 16 attempts in the first half in route to their fourth straight loss; a 64-39 defeat at the hands of St. Thomas. The loss is the fourth straight for St. Olaf. The Oles are now 6-7 overall and 2-6 in MIAC play.
Defensively, the Oles held their ground against the first-place Tommies. St. Thomas shot 35.7 percent and scored only 25 points themselves in the first half. Mark Buri (Sr., St. Paul, Minn/Trinity H.S.), St. Thomas' leading scorer, was six-of-17 on the night, netting just 15 points. Despite the lopsided score, Buri played all 40 minutes for the Tommies. Five of Buri's points came in the final minutes of the game.
Jimmy Sioris (Jr., Edina, Minn.) led the way for the Tommies, collecting 15 points and 14 rebounds. Kevin Fitzgerald (Jr., Centerville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy H.S.) and Nic Marx (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn/Benilde-St. Margaret H.S.) added ten points each for St. Thomas.
Matt Schlenker (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo H.S.) had his second career double-double with ten points and 14 rebounds, while Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) had 15 points.
The Oles travel to Si Melby Hall on the campus of Augsburg College in Minneapolis on Saturday, January 12, for a duel with the Auggies. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. The game can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
