The Oles shine in their first indoor meet of the season

The St. Olaf men's track and field team opened its 2002 indoor season on Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Northwest Open. A group of Oles competed at the non-scored meet that included other Division. I, II, and III competitors from around the state.

Nine of the Oles selected by Coach Bill Thornton placed in the finals of their individual events. All-American Cory Dingels (Sr, Gibbon, Minn) exhibited his strength in the jumping events placing second in the long jump with a jump of 22 feet and one inch and fifth in the high jump with 6 feet, four and 3/4 inches. Evan Sundquist (Fy., White Bear Lake, Minn.) placed seventh in the triple jump covering 41 feet, eight inches and Eric Droher (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) placed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet, nine inches. Andrew Cole (Sr, Mankato, Minn) took fourth in the 800 with a time of 1:59.28. Kelly Fulton (Fy, Billings, Mont) placed seventh in 3000 with a time of 9:08.23. He was followed by Pedar Arneson's (So, Montevideo, Minn) in eighth place with 9:10.20 and Mark Sullivan (Jr, West Bend, Wis) in15th place with a time of 9:20. Jared Anderson (Jr., Zumbrota, Minn.) took ninth place in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 3/4 inches.

The Oles outpaced Bemidji State for first place in the Distance Medley finishing in 10:29.79. The team members were Rob Hillard (Jr., Columbia, Mo.), Ryan Noreen (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.), Jeff Boerner (Sr., Corcoran, Minn.), and Andrew Cole(Sr., North Mankato, Minn.). The 4x400 team of Gaute Johnsen (Jr., Akershus, Norway), Cory Dingels (Sr., Gibbon, Minn.), Matt Wieland (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Noreen took fifth with a time of 3:28.82.

The Oles will compete next Saturday, January 19th at 1:00 pm at the MSU Mankato Invitational.
