Oles end skid, rout Auggies 86-65
January 14, 2002
The St. Olaf men's basketball team had more points, three pointers, assists and field goals in the first half of Saturday's 86-65 win over Augsburg than it did in the entire game in their loss to St. Thomas.
The Oles had an excellent performance from the floor, shooting 51.7 percent for the game (31-60) and an even more impressive 57 percent in the first half (20-34).
Ten Oles scored, and five were in double figures in the win. Justin Bonestroo (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) had a ten of his career-high fifteen points in the first half, propelling the Oles to 47-39 lead at the break. Tim Nelson (Jr., Braham, Minn.) had 13 points and five assists off the bench, while Cory Paterson (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) had 11 and Matt Schlenker ( So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo) ten points in the win.
Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) had 21 points, 14 in the first half, to lead the Oles. Ludwig, who also had five blocks, needs just 26 points to become the 14th player in St. Olaf history to score 1,000 career points.
Kevin Jaunich (Jr., Delano, Minn.) had seven assists for the Oles. St. Olaf had 23 assists and just 13 turnovers.
Adam Kotewa had ten points for the Auggies, who have now lost six straight. Augsburg was 0-for-14 from the three-point arc in the second half.
With the win, the Oles improve to 7-7 overall and 3-6 in MIAC play. The Auggies fall to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the MIAC.
The Oles are idle until Wednesday, January 16, when they travel across the Cannon River for a duel with cross-town rival Carleton College. The game is the second of the night, as it will follow the 6:00 p.m. women's game.
The night has been designated as Coaches vs. Cancer event by Carleton head coaches Tammy Metcalf-Filzen and Guy Kalland. The games like all Carleton athletic events are free of admission. Fans are asked to bring a small monetary donation to help the foundation, which has raised over $16 million dollars for cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy efforts.
Both games can be heard on the Mighty 920 AM, KDHL.
