Oles beat the Wildcats
January 15, 2002
In MIAC conference play, the St. Olaf basketball team played the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul on Monday, January 14. The Oles played a great second half to come back from a six point halftime deficit and win the game 68-56. The Ole defense kept St. Kate's well under their season scoring average of 67 points per game.
St. Olaf picked up their defense and executed well in the second half, enabling them to close the scoring gap and pull ahead. Once the Oles gained the lead they never let up. Coach Buresh commented, "We played excellent defense, especially in the second half and really controlled the boards." Rebounds and free throws were again key for the Oles, as they out-rebounded St. Kate's 53 to 31 and got to the line 33 times.
St. Olaf again showed their depth and enjoyed a well-balanced scoringattack. 11 players got significant playing time and the St. Olaf bench contributed 27 points to the win. Liz Woodrow (Sr, Aitkin, Minn.) and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) each scored ten points for the Oles, while Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.), Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.), and Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) all added eight. Enlund led the team in rebounds with eight, and both Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) and Woodrow grabbed six boards each. St. Catherine's Kate Stodolka led all scoring with 23 points.
The Oles have won four out of the last six games, improving their record to 8-6 overall and 6-5 in the MIAC. The Oles face a tough stretch in their schedule, playing four top MIAC teams Carleton College, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Mary's University, and Concordia College. Three of the four games are on the road.
On Wednesday, January 16, the Oles travel across the Cannon River to face their conference rival, Carleton College. Game time is 6:00 PM.
