Oles fall to Carleton

Matt Stangl (Sr, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) had a career-high 23 points, while Steve Nuessle (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson H.S.) had 16 and 11 boards as the Knights defeated St. Olaf 66-60 at Carleton's West Gymnasium in Northfield.
Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) had 14, Kevin Jaunich (Jr., Delano, Minn.) 12 and Matt Schlenker (Rochester, Minn./Mayo H.S.) 10 points for the Oles. Schlenker also corralled a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Oles, down by five at half, took the lead 43-41 on consecutive Ludwig lay-up's, the latter at the 12:58 mark of the second half. The Knights outscored St. Olaf 19-7 over the next ten minutes to take a ten point lead, one that Carleton would not relinquish.
Scott Christensen (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) added eight assists for the Knights.
With the win, Carleton retains the Goat Trophy and improves to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in MIAC play. The Trophy, which has been passed between schools since 1913, only changes location if a school sweeps the season series.
The Oles drop to 7-8 overall and 3-7 in MIAC play. The loss was the fourth by six points or less.
St. Olaf hosts Gustavus on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The sixth-ranked Gusties were upset Wednesday night by Augsburg 78-75 at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis. The St. Olaf- Gustie game can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
