St.Olaf beats Augsburg

The St. Olaf basketball team defeated conference opponent Augsburg College 62-48 at St. Olaf on Saturday, January 12. In their first meeting of the season, Augsburg narrowly edged the Oles in overtime, 58-64.

Leading the Oles to their victory was Liz Woodrow (Sr, Aitkin, Minn.) who went five for eight from the field and led all scoring with 15 points. Both Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) added nine points, and Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn) had five assists. Johnson and Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) had five rebounds each.

St. Olaf led throughout the contest, holding Augsburg to just 16 points in the first half. Scoring in the second half was balanced, and the Oles were never able to secure a substantial lead until late in the half.

Important team statistics for the game were fouls, free throws and turnovers. The Auggies committed 31 fouls in the contest, sending the Oles to the free throw line 28 times. St. Olaf was 14-17 in the second half and 19-28 for the game. While Augsburg shot slightly better from the field than the Oles, they committed 27 turnovers to the Oles? 12.

The Oles next play the College of St. Catherine at 7:30 PM on Monday, January 14 in St. Paul.
