On Thursday, January 17, the St. Olaf women?s hockey team faced the Augsburg Auggies in Minneapolis. The Oles came out hungry for a win and were rewarded by outstanding play and a highly intense game. However, they lost the close battle 5-4.

The Oles were first on the scoreboard with a goal at 3:09 in the first period. Erin Baxter (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) was able to put the puck in the net after it was juggled by the Augsburg goalie. The assist came from Kate Barnett (FY, Burnsville, Minn.). After being shutout their past three games, the Oles? intensity level rose and they played even harder against the Auggies. Unfortunately, Augsburg answered back and scored at 8:49 in the first period. However, St. Olaf came out on top at the end of the first period when Sarah Ray (So., St. Paul, Minn.) scored at 12:02 on the assist from Barnett.

The Auggies fought back in the second period, gaining momentum with an early power play goal only nine seconds into the period. The Oles took the lead again within two minutes with a second goal from Ray with the assist from Baxter. However, the Auggies were not to be denied and scored twice more in the second period, at 9:58 and at 18:46. The last goal of the second period came on a 6 on 5 numbers up situation resulting from a delayed penalty before the whistle was blown.

Going into the third period down by one, the Oles played aggressive defense and kept the period scoreless until late. At 15:16, Augsburg scored, raising the score to 3-5. The Oles did not let up however. At 17:10, Barnett brought it to a one-goal game with the assist from Ray. In the last minute and a half of the game, St. Olaf pulled goaltender Kerry Rollwagen (FY, Mendota Heights, Minn.) for the player advantage. Ray took many shots from the point, but unfortunately time ran out. The Oles had a total of 35 shots on goal. Rollwagen had 41 saves.

The Oles had an amazing game and are ready to face Augsburg again when they host the Auggies on Saturday night, January 19, at 7:00 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
