On Saturday, January 19 the St. Olaf basketball team dropped a close one conference opponent Gustavus Adolphus College, 64-57. The game was played in Northfield at the Skoglund Athletic Center.

"We really played a great game and did what we needed to do; especially on defense," commented Coach Buresh. "We just had too many turnovers at a crucial point in the game." The Oles played well against Gustavus, who is currently third in the MIAC with a conference record of 10-2. After trailing by two points at the half, the Oles shot 47.8 percent from the field in the second half and led by 3 points with seven minutes remaining in the game.

The Oles committed key turnovers against the Gustie full court pressure, allowing Gustavus to again assume the lead and come away with the win.

In team statistics, St. Olaf out-rebounded the Gusties 42-28 and shot better, both from the field and from the free throw line. However, St. Olaf had over twice as many turnovers as Gustavus. Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) led the Oles in scoring with 13 points. Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.), played well for the Oles, adding ten points and six assists. Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) scored eight points, and Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) and Mayme Cupkie (Jr, Owatonna, Minn.) played tough inside for the Oles, scoring eight and six points, respectively. Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) led all rebounders with nine.

The Oles (8-8 overall, 6-7 MIAC) next travel to Winona to play Saint Mary?s University at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, January 23.
