NORTHFIELD, MINN. ? The St. Olaf basketball team traveled across town to play conference rival Carleton College on Wednesday, January 16 and lost 67-52. Carleton, who upset MIAC leader the University of St. Thomas on January 14, is now 9-2 in the conference and is tied for second place with the College of St. Benedict.

Scoring went back and forth in the first half until the Oles made several costly mistakes against the Knights? full court pressure with four minutes remaining in the half. Taking advantage of St. Olaf's turnovers, Carleton was able to score eight unanswered points and led 33-27 at the half.

Scoring was again even in the second half, and St. Olaf was in it until the end, down by five points with three minutes remaining in the game.

In team statistics, Carleton's biggest advantage came from the free throw line. The Knights went 25 for 32 from the charity strip, while the Oles shot half as many free throws and were eight for 16 from the line. In addition, the Oles turned the ball over eight more times than Carlton, and the Knights scored 23 points off St. Olaf turnovers. In field goal shooting percentages, the edge went to St. Olaf, who shot 40 percent from the field in comparison to 35 percent for the Knights. Finally, while the Knights only out-rebounded St. Olaf by three, St. Olaf was unable to keep them off of the offensive boards and Carleton scored 16 second chance points.

Kristy Larson (FY, St. Ansgar, Iowa) led the Oles in scoring with nine points and rebounding with seven boards. Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) added seven points and six rebounds. Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.) also had seven points, and Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) had five assists.
