Oles defeat Cardinals 65-42
January 25, 2002
The St. Olaf women's basketball team (7-7 MIAC, 9-8 overall) traveled to Winona, Minn. on Wednesday, January 23, and defeated Saint Mary's University 65-42 in a key conference contest. The Cardinals (9-5 MIAC, 11-5 overall), currently in fifth place in the MIAC standings, beat the Oles 68-58 in the teams' first meeting of the season.
After a slow start, the Oles pulled it together and handled Saint Mary's pressure, shooting an impressive 44 percent from the field in the first half. After leading 29-25 at the break, the Oles came out tough in the second half and continued to execute on offense, shooting 46 percent from the field, while holding St. Mary's to an ice-cold 19 percent from the field. "We were playing exceptional defense, and we really started running the floor on offense, making it impossible for them to trap us where they wanted." In addition, the Oles went 14 for 20 from the free throw line for the half, clinching the lead and the win.
The Oles' Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) led all scoring with 12 points. Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) added nine points, going three for six from the three point line and starting post player Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) connected on four of five field goal attempts to score eight points. Kristy Larson (FY, St. Ansgar, Minn.) grabbed 11 boards for the Oles and Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) dished out six assists. The win was an important one for the Oles, as they are tied for sixth place in the MIAC race with the Concordia Cobbers. It also puts them only two games behind the fifth place Cardinals. Saturday, January 26, promises to be big for the Oles as they travel to Moorhead to face the Cobbers. Game time is 5:30 PM.
