Strong second half helps St. Olaf edge Macalester

The St. Olaf basketball team defeated the Macalester Scots at home on Wednesday, January 30. The 70-60 win puts them in a three-way tie for 5th place in the conference with Saint Mary's University and Concordia College in a tight race for MIAC playoff positions.

The Oles got off to a slow start, trailing by ten points during the first half. The Scots shot an impressive 51.9 percent from the field, while the Oles struggled on the offensive end, shooting only 27.3 percent. The Oles' match-up defense kept them close and they closed the scoring gap from the free throw line, trailing 34-33 at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Ole defense picked up, causing the Scots to struggle on the offensive end. The Oles were tough on the offensive boards as well, and shot 42. 9 percent for the half, in comparison to the Scots' 29 percent . St. Olaf held a decisive edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Scots 47-31. The Oles also had the advantage from the free throw line, going 24 for 30 from the line, while the Scots connected on nine of only 15 free throw attempts.

Molly Simon (FY, Hudson, Wis.) had a game high 14 points for the Oles, and three other Ole players scored in double digits. Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) scored 12, Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) scored 11, and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) added 10 points, going six for six from the free throw line. Enlund also grabbed eight boards for the Oles, and Sara Erickson (Jr, Cambridge, Minn.) secured six rebounds and added eight points. Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.) had five assists in the contest. Afton Hanson had a double-double for the Scots, scoring 23 points and grabbing ten rebounds.

St. Olaf next plays the Pipers of Hamline University at home on Saturday, February 2nd in a double-header. Game time is 1:00pm.
