St. Olaf men lose MIAC opener to GAC

The St. Olaf men's basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus 81-60 in the MIAC opener for both schools.
The Gusties used a 23-5 run in early minutes of the first half to take a 32-13 lead over the Oles. Gustavus was on top 46-25 at the end of the first half.
St. Olaf fought back, outscoring Gustavus 24-9 in the first 12 minutes of the second half, to cut the Gustie lead to six (55-49). Gustavus then got three-point basket's from Hans Sviggum (Jr., Kenyon, Minn.) and Kirk Walberg (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) to propell the seventh-ranked Gusties to their sixth win of the season.
St. Olaf was led by Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) and Kevin Jaunich (Jr., Delano, Minn.) who had 20 and 14 points in the loss.
Sviggum led the Gusties collecting 11 points, seven assists and just two turnovers. Chad Henke (Sr., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East), who played just 19 minutes due to foul trouble, led five Gusties in double figures, scoring 15 points in the win. Eric Nelson (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Sibley) added 13 points, while David Newell (Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) had 11 and Derek Nelson (Jr., Lyle, Minn.) added ten.
The Oles were plagued by turnovers. St. Olaf had 22 turnovers and just 11 assists while Gustavus had 20 assists and 15 turnovers. St. Olaf also had a rough day from three-point range, going just two-of-15 from beyond the arc. Jaunich was the only Ole able to connect, going two-for-four.
The Oles (3-2, 0-1 MIAC) travel to Winona to play St. Mary's University at 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, December 5th. The game can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
