St. Olaf women lose MIAC opener to Gusties

The St. Olaf women's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss to a tough Gustavus Adolphus team by a score of 62 to 51. The game, which was the second conference contest of the season for both teams, was held in St. Peter on Saturday, December 1.

The Oles, who seemed to have some trouble getting their offense going, trailed Gustavus throughout the entire game after the first five minutes of play. "Their defense gave us trouble. They were out in our passing lanes, and we had difficulty reacting to that. Our offense just sputtered," explained Coach Buresh. While the offense had difficulties executing, the Oles defense did a respectable job holding the talented Gustavus team to 62 points. St. Olaf committed 25 turnovers in the contest, and many of them were unforced. Coach Buresh commented, "We didn't always make smart choices with our passing, and you can't make poor choices against a team like Gustavus." The St. Olaf women also struggled with scoring, shooting only 35.8 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from the free throw line. The Oles also went dry at the three-point line, connecting on only one of 10 attempts. These percentages were lower than they have been for the team in previous contests.

Center Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) led the Oles in scoring with 13 points. Enlund and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) led the team in rebounding, each collecting six. Liz Woodrow (Sr, Aitkin, Minn.) added nine points for the Oles and Johnson contributed eight points. Leading scorer and rebounder for Gustavus was center Kelly Etzel with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Oles hope to cleanup their offense and cut down on their turnovers in their upcoming conference game versus St. Mary's University. The game will be played at home at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5.
