Ole men lose heartbreaker to Concordia

Mike Syverson?s alley-oop basket with 2.6 seconds left gave the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead College a 68-66 comeback win over St. Olaf.
John Breneman led Concordia with 14 points and seven rebounds. Syverson finished with 12 points and seven boards. Rob Flint, who threw the pass to Syverson, finished with seven assists.
Matt Hofkens? (Sr., Neenah, Wis.) 17 points led all scorers. Hofkens, who came off the bench, had 15 in the first half. In the second half, he was just one-of-eight from the field, finishing six-of-16 for the game. The Oles shot just 37 percent from the floor in the second half. Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) added 15, and Tim Nelson (Jr., Braham, Minn.) 12 points for the Oles in the loss.
The Oles led by as many as 14 in the first half and by nine at halftime. Concordia tied the game for the first time with 11:06 to play. The Cobbers would not take their first lead until the 3:26 mark, when Kevin Gilcrest hit a three-pointer. Concordia took their largest lead (66-62) on Trent Hagen?s offensive rebound and basket with 1:22 to play.
St. Olaf?s Mike Ludwig scored in the post with 30 seconds left to cut the lead to 66-64. On the ensuing play, Ludwig stole the ball and scored on lay-up to tie the game with 22 seconds left.
With the loss, St. Olaf drops to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play. The Cobbers have now won four straight and are 3-0 in the MIAC.
The Oles travel to Hamline University on Wednesday, December 12, for their final conference game before the Holidays. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
