The St. Olaf women?s basketball team fell to Augsburg College on Monday, December 10, in their last contest before the winter break. The game, played in Minneapolis at Si Melby Hall, extended beyond regulation play into overtime, with the Oles losing by a score of 58-64.

Scoring was fairly even from the beginning of the game. Neither team ever held a substantial lead in the first half, and both teams retired to their locker rooms for halftime with the score tied at 30-30. The second half was much the same, and there were18 total lead changes in the contest. St. Olaf did lead by as many as seven with nine minutes remaining, but the Auggies then went on an eight point run to lead by one. Scoring by both teams continued to go back and forth until the Auggies found themselves ahead by five point with only 48 seconds remaining in regulation. The Oles rallied, however, and tied the ball game at 56- 56 with a three pointer by Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) and a layup by Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.). The Auggies then had 18 seconds to score for the win, but St. Olaf played tough defense and the Augsburg shot was no good.

Impressive last-minute play by St. Olaf kept them in the contest, but overtime play was controlled by Augsburg. The Oles were unable to connect on the offensive end, scoring only two points from the free throw line during the overtime period thus, allowing the Auggies to take the lead and win the close game.

Both teams were fairly even in statistical areas, but Augsburg shot slightly better from the field and committed fewer turnovers. The Auggies played their normal physical, scrappy style of basketball, and the game was plagued by frequent possession changes and jump balls.

Cara Battles (Sr, McGregor, Minn.) lead the Oles in scoring and assists with 14 points and four assists. Mundahl added ten points, and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) had a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds. Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) led the Oles with 12 rebounds.

The St. Olaf Women (4-4, 2-3 MIAC) next play MIAC opponent Bethel College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, at St. Olaf?s Skoglund Athletic Center.
