Ole women use hat tricks to beat Hamline 6-1

On Tuesday, December 11, the Ole women's hockey team had a non-conference match up against the Hamline Pipers. With two Ole hat tricks, St. Olaf beat Hamline 6-1 increasing their overall record to 4-8 and 1-5 in the MIAC.
The Oles came out very strong in the first period scoring three goals in the first three minutes. The first goal was scored at 1:04 by Brit Schultheis (FY, Shoreview, Minn.) with the assist from Kayla Wente (FY, Waterloo, Iowa). At 1:31, Schultheis scored again with the assist from Wente. Then again at 2:07, Kate Barnett (FY, Bursnville, Minn.) scored for the Oles with the assist from Sarah Ray (So, St. Paul, Minn.). Hamline's defense came alive after the first five minutes and did not allow further scoring by the Oles in the first period.
The second period brought two more goals for the Oles. At 10:16, Schultheis scored an unassisted goal. Then with less than a minute left in the second period, Barnett scored again with assists from Nadia Nickerson (Sr, Powell, Wyo.) and Erin Baxter (FY, Rosemount, Minn.).
With a score of 5-0 going into the third period, the Pipers fought back and scored on the Oles at the 8:39 mark. However, the Oles put in one more goal with five seconds left in the game. At 19:55, Barnett scored her third goal of the night with assists from Ray and Jenny Groth (FY, Waupaca, Wis.).
The Oles had 17 shots for the game. Ole goaltender, Andrea Smith (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) made 31 saves for the Oles. Schultheis and Barnett both earned hat tricks in the game.
The next time the Oles take the ice will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, against UW-Stevens Point at the Fairbault Ice Arena.
