Oles finish the season with a 5-2 win against the Wildcats
November 2, 2001
The Oles were able to find the net five times in Saturday?s game against the College of St. Catherine. St. Olaf started the game with high intensity, applying solid pressure to Wildcat?s defense. It wasn?t until the 17th minute, however, that the Oles scored their first goal. Brie Messick (So, Hastings, Minn.) received a ball crossed from Carolyn Detjen (Jr, Juneau, AK) and beat a defender to place the ball in the net. The Oles scored once again at the 21st minute when Karen Hamre (Sr, Roseville, Minn.) took a shot when a ball was deflected off of a corner kick. The Oles finished the half with a 2-0 lead.
The Ole?s came out strong in the second half, but in the first few minutes they had a slight breakdown when Mikan Overton (FY, Minneapolis, Minn.) headed a ball to clear it. Unfortunately, a St. Kate forward was in the right position and took a shot that went into the top corner. The Oles applied pressure once again, but may have applied too much when the Wildcats got a quick counter attack and scored at the 61st minute.
The Oles regained their composure and took the lead at the 70th minute mark when Overton made a pass across the mouth of the goal that found Sarah Cornell (FY, Minnetonka, Minn.) who finished with a nice easy pass into the goal. To conclude the scoring, at the 81st minute defender Pam Crall (Jr, Gurnee, Ill.) brought the ball out of the back and took a shot outside the eighteen that went into the top corner. To finish the game, Kerry Goldman (Jr, Plymouth, Minn.) placed one into the top corner of the net assisted by Detjen. The Oles out-shot St. Kates 18-4 and had only 1 goalie saves to St. Kate?s 6.
The Oles came through and finished with a strong win for their final game of the year and ended the season with a record of 9 wins and 9 losses overall and 5-6 in the MIAC.
