Womens swimming wins first meet
November 6, 2001
On Saturday, November 3, 2001 the Ole women?s swimming and diving team traveled to St. Paul to compete in their first conference dual meet of the season against the College of St. Catherine. The Ole women dominated the meet as they took first place honors in all 16 events. The final score of156 to 50 reflects the Oles? depth of talent.
Coach Dave Hauck commented that, "It is difficult to compete against a less developed team, but we handled the challenge well and had some great finishes. Swimming in this type of meet can only help us in the future. We know that we have the ability to race when the competition isn?t so intense, so when we get to the coming meets where our competition parallels our abilities we will be able to race even better."
The Oles and Wildcats faced each other in the long order of events, meaning 100 and 200 yards of each stroke, 400 IM, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay, and 1 & 3 meter diving. The 200 medley relay team of Liz Hathaway (So, Lincoln, Neb.), Anna Guenther (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn.), Katie Buecksler (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.), and Katy Brentz (FY, Arden Hills, Minn.) set the tone of the meet with a first place finish in a time of 1:57.06. Jenna Kubat (FY, Des Moines, Iowa) continued that pace into the individual events by competing as the sole Ole swimmer in the 1000-yard freestyle and winning the event with a time of 11:37.66. Brentz took first place honors individually in both the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.98, and in the100 freestyle with a time of 56.16. Guenther also took a pair of first place finishes. In the 50 freestyle, she came in with a time of 26.98 and she also won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:36.96. Katie Detwiler (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) continued the trend with a couple of first places in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM. Detwiler finished the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:18.68, and the 400 IM in 4:51.10. The 400 freestyle relay team of Brentz, Guenther, Hathaway, and Laura Schutt (Jr., Niles, Ill.) finished the meet out for the Oles with a win in a time of 3:53.40.
The Ole women will join the men?s team and head to Gustavus Adolphus to swim at 6:00 PM on Friday, November 9. The Gustavus dual meet will be a challenge, but the Oles are excited to race and face their opponents. Both teams are full of potential and the outcome is guaranteed to be interesting.
