November 6, 2001

St. Olaf Women's hockey team opened their season this weekend by traveling to UW-Eau Claire and taking on the Blugolds. Starting for the Oles on Friday night was senior captain Nadia Nickerson (Powell, Wy), sophomore Sarah Ray (St. Paul, Minn.), and first-years Kate Barnett (Burnsville, Minn), Erin Baxter (Rosemount, Minn.), and Sarah Johnson (Albert Lea, Minn.). The Oles rotated goaltenders; junior Amanda Chumbley (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) started and played the first period, first- year Andrea Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) played the second, and first-year Kerry Rollwagen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) finished the game. The Oles played hard in the first period but fell behind by one goal in the last few minutes. In the second period, the Blugolds scored three more times. However, the Oles answered with their first goal of the season. The goal was scored by first-year, Brit Schultheis (Shoreview, Minn.) with the assists from senior captain, Megan Duffey (Richfield, Minn.) and first-year Kayla Wente (Waterloo, Iowa). Unfortunately, the Oles could not come back and were defeated 1-5. The Oles had 21 shots on goal and saved 34 of Eau Claire's 39 shots.

On Saturday, the Oles again faced the UW-EC Blugolds. Starting for the Oles were senior captains Megan Duffey and Sara Vandenberg (Mound, Minn.) along with Schultheis, Wente, and Lorna Wilson (FY., Wasilla, Ak). In goal for the Oles was Chumbley. The Blugolds took an early lead by scoring two goals late in the first period. However, that was all the Oles would allow. St. Olaf played extremely well and strong for the next two periods despite many penalties. The Oles held the Blugolds and played them evenly for the second and third periods. Unfortunately, the Oles were unable to score despite the 20 shots on goal. Chumbley saved 38 of UW-EC's 40 shots.

In spite their losses, the Ole women are off to a promising start. St. Olaf will face the Blugolds again this weekend, November 9 at 7:00 PM at Northfield and November 10 at 4:15 PM at the Fairbault Arena.
