The St. Olaf men?s hockey team opened the 2001-2002 season this past weekend against the Concordia Cobbers, losing by a score of 7-3 on Friday night and tying 3-3 on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, Concordia jumped out to an early 2-0 behind a goal by Josh Rogers and a power play tally from Toby Schneider. Dana Quinn (FY, Madison, Wis.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 4:58 mark of the first period to cut the lead to 2-1, but Schneider responded with his second of the game at 7:16 of the first to extend the lead to 3-1. The end of the first period was marred by a huge fight that led to two Cobber ejections and three Ole ejections including Jordan Bronce (Jr, Eden Prairie, Minn.), Case Martin (So, Fairbanks, Ak) and Ryan Sisson (Jr, Eagan, Minn.). However, the Oles came out of the scuffle with a power play and Dan Norsten (So, Eagan, Minn.) cut the lead to 3-2 just 27 seconds into the second period. Brian Meyer (Jr, Sun Prairie, Wis.) then tied the game at 3-3 with a screen shot from the point, but that?s as close as the Oles would get. Andy Vix broke the game open with a short-handed goal at 18:01 of the second period and the Oles never recovered. Josh Rogers, Shawn Klevan, and Treavor Peterson all added goals in the third period as Concordia coasted to a 7-3 victory. Garret Hasti (So, St. Louis Park, Minn.) stopped 34 of 41 shots in the loss while his counterpart from Concordia, Jason Gregoire, made 40 saves on 43 shots. Special teams killed St. Olaf as the Oles went 1-12 on the power play and gave up one short-handed goal while Concordia finished 3-8 on the power play.

The second game proved to be much more of a defensive battle. Jack Steen scored an early power play goal at 5:35 of the first period to give the Cobbers a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 throughout the first period before the Oles exploded in the second period. Justin Bronce (Sr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied his first of the year at 8:20 of the second period while Jason BreMiller (Jr, Millbrook, NY) scored two goals, one at 9:30 and the other at 11:24 of the second period to give the Oles a 3-1 lead. Concordia would add a Brady Burgess power play goal at 12:53 of the second to cut the lead to 3-2 and Aaron Marsh tied the game at 3-3 with another power play goal at 8:54 of the third period. Both teams had numerous chances during the overtime session, but could not capitalize and the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Jake Bullard (Jr, Bloomington, Minn.) stopped 35 of 38 shots for the Oles while Gregoire made 37 saves on 40 shots for the Cobbers. Once again, special teams played a huge rule in the game with the Oles going 0-9 on the power play while Concordia converted 3 of 11 chances.

After the weekend series, St. Olaf starts the year with a 0-1-1 record (0-1-1 MIAC) while Concordia starts with a 1-0-1 record (1-0-1 MIAC). Up next for the Oles is a two-game series with Hamline University on Friday, November 9 in St. Paul and Saturday, November 10 in Northfield. Both games begin at 7 pm.
